San Ramon was once home to local Native American tribes. In the 1790s became Mission San Jose grazing land, and then part of Jose Maria Amador’s 16000 acre Rancho San Ramon. American settlers first came to San Ramon in 1850, and many of its founding families are remembered today on the streets, canyons, and hills in and around the city.

With 56 parks, 2 public libraries, miles of hiking trails, public pools, performing arts venues, farmers market and numerous annual events to choose from at the community center, the city provides countless opportunities for the heart, body, and soul. San Ramon is in close proximity to the Las Trampas Regional Wilderness, and residents love to walk and bike the Iron Horse Trail in either direction toward Danville or Dublin through the center of the city.
