Walk from the Town Green down Hartz Avenue on a Thursday evening in August, and the storefronts look familiar. Look closer. Four of the addresses you have known for years are now under new operators, one is still counting down to a soft open, and the sequence of who took over from whom tells you more about downtown Danville right now than any "best of" list. If you already live here, the useful question is not what is new. It is which of the new places is walking distance from the event you were already planning to attend.
The thesis: these are takeovers, not arrivals
Downtown Danville did not get a wave of net-new restaurants this year. It got a chain of tenant swaps in which experienced operators, most of them already working within a fifteen-minute drive, took over addresses that had built their own followings. Rancho Cantina, the Lafayette Californio-style restaurant on Mount Diablo Boulevard, is moving into 501 Hartz Avenue, the Cocina Hermanas space, with a bigger bar program and wood-fired dishes carrying over from the original. It is the brand's first location outside Lafayette. At 100 Railroad Avenue, Taverna Sorrentina has taken the Isola Osteria address after that restaurant closed for family health reasons; the new owners, Valerio Piscopo, Giovanni Della Peruta, and Rosario Mazzocchi, spent roughly a decade working together at Locanda Ravello a few blocks away before branching out on their own.
The pattern matters because it changes what "trying somewhere new" costs you as a resident. When the person plating your dinner has been cooking within the 94526 zip code for years, the risk of a mediocre first visit drops. The reshuffle is also concentrated on two corridors, Hartz between about Prospect and Linda Mesa and the short Railroad Avenue stretch that spills into the Town Green, which means every one of these new addresses is a walkable pre or post pairing for the August event calendar the Town has already published.

Two of these are notable beyond the address change. Sushi Tamahime opened at The Clocktower carrying a Kanazawa pedigree; the parent group runs restaurants in Japan, including a Shibuya location under the Kanazawa Maimon Sushi name, per local coverage at Beyond the Creek. Taverna Sorrentina's owners told Diablo Magazine that they had been searching for space in Walnut Creek and Alamo before Angelo D'Alo, Isola's owner, offered them the Railroad Avenue address because they had not thought Danville was in their budget. That is a specific, credible signal about what the downtown rental market is doing to independent restaurant operators, and it is the kind of context that does not show up in a Yelp roundup.

Thursday, August 13: Joybound Around Town
The animal welfare organization's downtown evening lands on a Thursday, which historically pulls a lighter dinner crowd on Hartz. If you are walking down from the Town Green afterward, the 501 Hartz address, now Rancho Cantina in preview or soft-open form depending on when their permits clear, is the closest of the swap addresses. If Rancho Cantina is not yet seating, Kaia's Island Kitchen & Tiki Bar is the other logical pivot for a lower-key second stop.
Friday, August 21: Jazz & Juice at Theatre Plaza
The Town has described this as an inaugural evening at Theatre Plaza featuring a professional jazz trio and complimentary refreshments. Theatre Plaza sits a short walk from The Clocktower, which puts Sushi Tamahime in the natural pre-show slot. If you have out-of-town guests and want the highest-signal introduction to what has changed downtown this year, the sequence of Sushi Tamahime for an early dinner followed by a jazz set on the Plaza is the version of the evening that would be hardest to reproduce twelve months ago.
Friday, August 28: A Couture Closet Live Fashion Show
The Town has scheduled an outdoor runway on Theatre Plaza featuring pieces from two downtown Danville boutiques. This is a Hartz Avenue evening in every practical sense. Taverna Sorrentina at 100 Railroad is the closest of the recently reopened spaces; the trio behind it have emphasized generous portions at an accessible price point rather than a fine-dining label, per their comments to Diablo Magazine, which fits an evening where dinner is the warm-up rather than the main event.
Sunday, August 30: Hot Summer Sundays Car Show
The car show returns to historic Downtown Danville with classic cars, live music, and food. The show is a daytime and early-evening event that puts you directly on Hartz, which is exactly where the swap map is most concentrated. The pragmatic move for residents is to skip the on-street food booths and book a seat at one of the new tenants a block off the closure. Registration for the show opened May 1 on the Danville Hot Summer Sundays site.
August through September: Eugene O'Neill Festival
The festival's staggered programming across late summer is the outlier on the calendar because it runs on repeat rather than a single evening. That makes it the best proving ground for the new addresses. If you are going to try Hashiya Sushi at Danville Square, Kibi's Cafe a few doors down, or the Sorrento-Amalfi menu at Taverna Sorrentina, an O'Neill weekend is the low-stakes evening to do it.
Sunday, September 20: Danville Concours d'Elegance
Farther out but worth queuing on the calendar now, the Concours brings a different visitor profile downtown than the Hot Summer Sundays show. If you have been meaning to see the interior at Sushi Tamahime under normal conditions, book before Concours week rather than during it.
What the pattern tells a resident who has lived here a while
Two things stand out when you line up the swaps against the calendar.
First, the operators taking over these addresses are largely people who already knew this audience. Rancho Cantina's ownership, per community coverage, has been running the Lafayette flagship since 2024 and extending hours there. Taverna Sorrentina's team spent about ten years inside Locanda Ravello. Sushi Tamahime brought a Kanazawa operating record with them. That is a different pattern from the "expansion location from a national brand" story you might read into a similar list in another Bay Area suburb. It suggests that Hartz and Railroad rents in 2026 are being cleared by people who already know exactly what a downtown Danville dinner check looks like on a Friday in August.
Second, the concentration on Hartz and Railroad means residents who have not eaten downtown in six months should treat the next four weekends as a reset rather than a series of one-offs. The Town has clustered its programming into the same two-block radius as the swap map. Between now and the September 20 Concours, almost every Town-sponsored evening on Theatre Plaza, the Town Green, or Hartz itself sits within a five-minute walk of at least one of the new tenants.
The version of this fall where you have not walked into any of them is a version where you are getting a worse read on your own downtown than the visitors coming in for the car show.
